Heathrow

The Challenge

heathrow_131_01The Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre (known as WAND) handles millions of international letters and parcels sent to and from the UK every day. And at over 40,000 square metres, is one of the largest Centres in the world. Given its high profile, security in and around the area is paramount.

Romec was contracted to design and install an integrated security system on the site. The brief was to provide security systems with high levels of intruder protection, video entry, proximity and biometric access control. The project also involved the design and installation of a dedicated Local Area Network (LAN) with CAT5 structured cabling to transmit the video signals and telemetry for the Centre.

The Solution

An additional network structure was installed to accommodate the access control system and integrated controls, together with the ability to manage all the security systems from Graphical User Interfaces (GUI. The GUI additionally provide maps of the site, detail the location of alarm activations and automatically present the local CCTV images on monitors. The CCTV cameras record, via an array of high capacity digital storage systems, providing secure images with significant frame capture rates.

Additional storage systems allow the operator to control real-time recording of specific incidents.

The Results

“ Fundamental to the success of this project is the simple to use integrated security system. This system is innovative in its design with the graphic interface integral to its ease of operation. The multifunctional design of this system is also proving a benefit to the operation at the centre.”

John Leicester, Security Operations Manager, Heathrow – Worldwide Distribution Centre.
