British Museum

The Challenge

The British Museum was founded by Parliament in 1753 and holds for the nation, collections of antiquities, prints and drawings, ethnography and coins and medals that are considered amongst the finest in the world. It is one of the most popular museums in the world and receives over four million visitors each year.

They required the replacement of chiller units and associated service works for the Japanese Galleries’ air conditioning system, and the installation of a complete range of mechanical and electrical services to a new virtual mummy exhibition based around a 3-D IMAX cinema. This included ventilation and electrical power supplies, chilled water pipe work and fire alarm systems.bsi_-_british-museum_131

The Solution

Romec was selected by the British Museum to provide mechanical and electrical installation and security installation/maintenance works. Two new chillers, each weighing 2.5 tonnes, lifted by crane to the roof and installed on new maintenance platforms and walkways, also fitted by Romec.

These now form part of the vital air conditioning and ventilation system that controls the environment for the exhibitions - monitored 24/7 to ensure the environment keeps our national treasures safe and secure.

The replacement of the air handling plant in the special exhibitors’ gallery, the anteroom, the boardroom and the workshop areas required the removal of a large central air handling unit and associated services/equipment, and replacing it with six new units. These elements were located in three levels, complete with associated duct-work, pipe-work (chilled and medium temperature hot water), humidifiers, access platforms and distribution.

The Results

All works checked through successful plant trials and environmental monitoring, establishing that the design criteria had been accomplished. Vasant Karlekar, Engineering Planning Manager, at The British Museum commented 'Romec has a good history of work here at the British Museum.'
