Security officer awarded for bravery

Barbara Checklin, acting as Romec Security Officer was awarded a Regional Award from the BSIA (British Security Industry Authority) for Outstanding Act.

In December 2008 Barbara was working her shift as a Security Officer based at Chesterfield Royal Mail Admin Building, when she noticed on her CCTV Screen a man climbing onto the bridge railings nearby.  The man was threatening to jump onto the busy main road below and commit suicide.  Barbara was successful in staying calm, taking control of the situation and talking to the man - encouraging him to climb back over the railings before the emergency services arrived.

Janet Wall, Romec's Director of Cleaning and Office Management commented "If the man had jumped there was a very real chance that he would have killed himself and posed a serious danger to other people travelling in vehicles below. As a result of Barbara's bravery, she helped prevent a truly tragic incident - Barbara's quick thinking and bravery is a credit to the Romec team".

The award was presented on Monday 9th February in front of representatives of Romec (Pat Rigby General Manager, Tracey Queenan Area Manager and Geoff Parkin Team Manager), representatives from CIS Security including Nick Hawksley Contracts Manager and Trevor Bailey Supervisor based at Chesterfield.
